@ahotelsnob: Thompson Playa del Carmen & Beach House, Mexico

Thompson Playa del Carmen, Mexico

I spend a lot of time researching new hotels and reviewing feedback before I make a reservation. Yes, I’m particular and @ahotelsnob, so why is it that I could fill a blog with posts about Thompson Hotels? The creative minds behind this new-ish flag keep evolving their concept and are perhaps hitting their stride in Mexico with exceptional hotels in Cabo San Lucas and Playa Del Carmen. At current count I’ve stayed with Thompson in Miami, New York, Nashville, Seattle, Cabo and Playa.

Let’s talk Playa del Carmen since that’s my most recent trip.

Thompson Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Start with the basics

Playa Del Carmen is a charming beach town 45 minutes south of Cancun. Prior to the arrival of Thompson, it seemed to me like a place for big resort chains and small boutique properties.

Things changed when Thompson opened its dual-property, urban oasis on Avenida 5th in the center of town coupled with a 20-room beachfront building.

Who came up with this brilliant idea?

The City:

Modern, contemporary, sexy curved-glass building above street retail (think H&M, LaCoste…), an insane rooftop pool and trendy restaurant for the young(er) crowd.

The Beach:

Clean, contemporary, boutique building with its own slice of ocean, pool, bar and restaurant for those seeking to be away from the scene.

Make everything operate as one and this is literally the best of two worlds.

If it’s been said before, it’s going be said again – service makes a hotel special.

And Thompson Playa delivers all over the place. From our favorite Lezlie (sorry ‘bout the “z”) at the Beach House reception, the bar staff, pool attendants, servers and housekeeping, this place knows how to hire and train good people. Throw in an amazing yoga instructor plus good drivers from CUN airport, and we had an experience that many 5-star hotels struggle to offer – fun, genuine, relaxed.

Keep threading that needle Thompson Hotels – luxury, style and value is a winning combo.

Be inspired. Go explore.

Short Notes:

• Playa is a short ride from CUN airport. Taxis are cheap but janky. Opt for some swish and get a hotel driver.

• When we booked, the hotel offered a “meals included” plan which was a ridiculous value (good ridiculous). It covered everything except gratuity and those all-day-rose type beverages…. But for the record, this is not an all-inclusive resort, nor will I ever stay at one…

• The rooms at Beach House are ocean “view” but the site is tight so don’t expect expansive ocean vistas unless you book the swish oceanfront suite (that will be my target next trip).

• City hotel has cool city rooftop and some distant water views. It is beautiful but again, it’s not for the views.

I love the layout of the hotel from the pictures you have posted. The alleviated sitting area by the beach is perfect for reading. We had been to Playa back in 2009 but would love to visit again.
