@ahotelsnob: Monastero Santa Rosa, Italy

Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel & Spa, Conca dei Marini, Italy.

It’s easier to write a bad review than good, don’t you think? “This wasn’t right” or “they forgot ”. Which means starting my blog with the Monastero Santa Rosa (let’s just call it MSR, OK?) is tough writing since this hotel and staff executes at such a high level it is extraordinary to find something not done well. Designing and building a spectacular hotel is a true art and deserves praise.

The real difference between a beautiful place (which is MSR from corner to corner) and one of the finest hotel properties in the world are the details.

It takes a couple days but you eventually appreciate that each piece of silver, linen, serving tray, uniform, glassware and furniture is perfect. The fabulous Chef Christof Bob told us the pre-opening prep consisted of an array of stemware, china, linens, etc that the team were asked to review, rate and recommend. The key was no one knew the price of each choice – if it worked and was expensive the budget would accommodate. If it was less expensive and worked, then design ruled the day. This place is not about name brands and status. It is pure taste, style and elegance.

We’ve traveled to MSR three times now, each visit during the July peak season of crowds and traffic. As we return for successive trips, we spend less time away from the property and more using the facilities. MSR has twenty rooms which start at expensive and go up from there. Don’t come here expecting a scene like the bar at Le Sirenuse in Positano. Prepare yourself for some artfully crafted cocktails, a manageable wine list and an elegant dinner with Amalfi Coast views. If that is too formal (it is indeed quiet in the restaurant despite always being full), ask for the same dinner on the top floor Sunset Terrace, or under the grape arbor by the bar with the hilarious banter between Ivan and Andrea. As you would expect from a place of this caliber, everything seems possible, if not welcomed.

What makes the Monastero Santa Rosa so special and worth a visit or two (or more), is the feeling of calm in a sea of Amalfi-mania.

I’m oddly reminded of travels to India many years ago where the hotel provided a literal refuge from the days of dust, smells and chaos. I’ll happily take the smells of lemon, fresh tomatoes and basil in Italy. But after a day on the costa, returning to the warm greeting of the staff, cool dark hallways of the former monastery, and yes, that super swish infinity pool clinging to the cliff, I’ll embrace the beautiful calm of this fabulous place.

Short notes:

• We LOVE the rooms facing east to Amalfi. Ask for them. You can see the other view from the pool and restaurant

• They say not to drive in Amalfi Coast. Tru dat, but the ride to/from Rome at €1,100, ouch.

• Every single staff member is incredible. Friendly, warm, helpful.

• Prepare to enjoy most meals at the hotel. Nothing is walkable but Chef Bob makes it well worth staying in for the night.
